Man presumed drowned in Russian River; crew searches area in Monte Rio

Emergency services in Sonoma County were searching Thursday morning for a man believed to have drowned in the Russian River in Monte Rio on Wednesday.

A dive team from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office attempted to locate the victim after he disappeared near Villa Grande Beach around 6:15 p.m.

The victim is believed to be a man in his mid-20s. Rescue workers and divers tried to find the victim until darkness fell on Wednesday and the search resumed on Thursday morning.

The Monte Rio Fire Protection District was the lead agency in the search, with assistance from the Sonoma County Fire Department.

Last month, a teenage boy drowned in the Russian River near Steelhead Beach north of Forestville, after he and another teen were swept away by the fast-moving water. The teen was rescued.
