CHICAGO (CBS) – Police said three men walked into a Family Dollar store in the South Shore neighborhood Tuesday evening and attacked a security guard, shooting and killing one of the robbers.

At 7:19 p.m., the three men wearing face coverings walked into the Family Dollar at 2346 E. 79th St., at Yates Boulevard, police said. One of them grabbed a gun and hit the unarmed guard in the face, police said.

The police will not say whether the men robbed the store.

The three men left the business, after which an ‘unknown person’ grabbed a gun and shot one of them. The alleged perpetrator who was shot, a 60-year-old man, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest, police said.

Police did not specify whether the person who fired the shots was involved in the earlier crime as a suspected perpetrator or victim, or as someone completely unrelated to the earlier events.

A weapon was found on the man who was shot. He was taken into custody at the hospital while charges were pending.
