  • Prosecutors say the man accused of allegedly attempting to assassinate Donald Trump previously wrote a letter.

  • “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, but I am deeply sorry for letting you down,” the letter reads.

  • According to federal authorities, the letter was found in a box that had been dropped off months before the Sept. 15 incident.

The suspect accused in the alleged attempted murder of Donald Trump previously wrote a letter confirming his intention to kill the former president, federal prosecutors said in a new court document Monday.

Three days after the September 15 incident, which occurred while Trump was golfing at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, police were contacted by a citizen who claimed that suspect Ryan Wesley Routh had delivered a box to his home months earlier.

Inside the box was a handwritten note that began, “Dear world,” according to court records.

“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, but I am so sorry that I let you down. I did the best I could and gave all the courage I could muster,” the letter read, according to court documents. “It is now up to you to get the job done; and I am offering $150,000 to whoever can get the job done.”

Prosecutors said the unidentified person in possession of the box said he opened it only after learning of the suspected assassination attempt on Trump at Trump International Golf Club.

Routh has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.

His lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
