The search for a man suspected of fatally shooting a Yorktown woman Saturday night ended in the Bronx when he shot himself as police chased him, authorities said.
Salvatore Ciniglio, 51, later died at a hospital from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The manhunt began shortly after city police responded to a report of domestic violence at the Coach ‘N Four apartment complex on East Main Street in Yorktown’s Jefferson Valley on Saturday evening and found the 63-year-old victim, Geraldine Krecmer, lying on the walkway with a gunshot wound . Ciniglio apparently confronted her there that evening when she returned home.
Authorities said Ciniglio had a troubled relationship with Krecmer’s daughter, with whom he shared a child.
Police issued a warning to city residents late Saturday night after identifying Ciniglio as a suspect. Within two hours of the shooting, NYPD officers in the Bronx observed and pursued the car Ciniglio was believed to be driving. Before they could confront him, he shot himself, authorities said.
Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman said the city would support Krecmer’s family no matter what. He praised the work of city police and thanked state and county police and other law enforcement agencies who assisted in the investigation.
Authorities weren’t sure where Ciniglio lived, but Westchester land records showed he bought a multi-family home on Saw Mill River Road in Ardsley two years ago. In those records he gave an address in Middle Village, Queens.
