Manhattan e-bike rider fatally crashes into double-parked tractor-trailer

A 38-year-old e-bike rider died after crashing into a double-parked tractor-trailer in Washington Heights, police said Sunday.

Jose Luis Zamora Rodriguez was driving east on W. 181st St. when he crashed into the rear lift gate of a 2019 Volvo tractor-trailer left unattended by the driver near Fort Washington Ave. on Saturday about 3:55 p.m., police said.

Medics rushed Zamora Rodriguez to Harlem Hospital, but he could not be saved. Police said he lived in the Bronx.

Police have made no arrests and are still investigating the accident.

The city’s Department of Transportation launched an e-bike safety campaign in March, following a particularly deadly year for cyclists.

According to city data, more than three times as many people died riding e-bikes than on traditional pedal-powered bikes in 2003, with 23 people dying on e-bikes and seven on traditional bikes. Seven of those were so-called “solo collisions,” in which a rider loses control or crashes into a stationary object.
