Marco Rubio is quietly auditioning for the role of Trump’s vice president

  • Sen. Marco Rubio is one of the leading candidates for Donald Trump’s election as vice president in 2024, according to a new report.

  • The New York Times reports that Rubio has taken a low-key approach in his effort to stand with Trump.

  • However, Rubio’s approach has left Trump a bit perplexed, the Times reports.

Senator Marco Rubio is apparently playing hard to get when it comes to beating the competition and making Donald Trump’s choice vice president, The New York Times reports.

His behind-the-scenes support has made Rubio a “leading candidate” like the vice president’s pick, The New York Times reported, citing Trump advisers.

According to the Times, Rubio was not keen on accompanying the president at rallies or hanging out at his Mar-a-Lago home. Instead, he became an “occasional policy advisor” to Trump.

But Rubio’s approach to supporting Trump has apparently confused the former president, who “personally wondered how much the senator wants the job,” the Times wrote, citing two people close to Trump.

Rubio is one of more than a dozen Republican personalities vying to become Trump’s 2024 running mate, but the former president and Florida senator haven’t always been friendly.

The senator ran against Trump during the 2016 Republican Party primaries, where both candidates insulted each other. Trump called Rubio “Little Marco Rubio,” and Rubio fired back by saying Trump has small hands. Rubio later regretted the insult.

The couple has moved past the schoolyard insults and supported each other politically. In 2022, Trump stumbled over Rubio’s Senate campaign. On Thursday, Trump named Rubio as one of the people who could join his ticket during a local cable news interview at his New York Rally.

Marco Rubio ranks third in Business Insider’s power rankings of Trump’s potential vice presidents — though Rubio faces the challenge of deciding whether to leave Florida. The Twelfth Amendment requires that a presidential and vice presidential candidate “shall not be an inhabitant of the same State.”

The Times reported that Trump is not conceding, but that Rubio is willing to say goodbye to his home state to stand next to Trump.

Representatives for Rubio and Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
