Marianne Williamson launches a bid for DNC chair

Marianne Williamson, the former Democratic presidential candidate and self-help author, announced Thursday that she is running for chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

In a video posted about her SubstackWilliamson argued that Democrats have failed “traditional political means” and that the party must “reinvent itself” to stand up to President-elect Donald Trump.

“I feel that I can help transform the party and reinvent the party because the politics of the past will not be enough to address the politics of the present and the future,” she said. “Donald Trump is a political phenomenon of the 21st century and we must become one too.”

Williamson, who has run two lengthy presidential campaigns, warned Democrats of an “electoral disaster” if the pain she says she has heard from Americans is not heard. She argued that her experience gives her insight into the party’s recovery and its relationship with voters.

The former presidential candidate joins a group of men who have already thrown their hats in for the DNC chairmanship, including Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Chairman Ken Martin; former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley; Ben Wikler, chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin; New York State Senator James Skoufis; and former Maryland Senate candidate Robert Houton.
