Marjorie Taylor Greene wants to ‘defund’ the entire state of New York because of Trump’s verdict

  • Trump was found guilty of 34 crimes by a jury in New York on Thursday.

  • Now, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene wants to cut off all federal funding to the state as punishment.

  • That’s not going to happen — but don’t be shocked if other Republicans agree with this idea.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene now wants to cut off all federal funding to the nation’s second-largest state.

The Georgia Republican said she will push House Speaker Mike Johnson to “defund” New York state after former President Donald Trump was convicted of 34 charges related to “hush money” payments he made to Stormy Daniels did so ahead of the 2016 election.

She made the comments Saturday during an interview with Steve Bannon on right-wing TV channel Real America’s Voice.

“I think the American people have turned around after seeing that belief come down in New York, to the point where it’s, you know what? Fuck New York,” Greene said. “New York doesn’t make a cent. We shouldn’t finance them a cent.’

The state, home to 19.6 million people, benefited from $383 billion in federal spending in fiscal year 2022, according to a report from the state comptroller.

It’s safe to say that Greene’s plan won’t come to fruition. The Georgian congresswoman has little formal power in the House of Representatives, as her recent attempt to impeach Johnson made clear.

Moreover, her GOP colleagues from New York — many of whom rely on the federal funding they secured to run for re-election — won’t support that.

There is also a clear contradiction in Greene’s position: Georgia, her home state, is home to one of the four criminal cases against Trump.

The congresswoman has touted the federal funding she has brought back to her district in the past — despite voting against the bill that provided it — and it’s hard to imagine she would push to eliminate all federal funds to Georgia .

But Greene’s radical politics are still influential among certain corners of the right, and other far-right Republicans could embrace similar positions amid anger over Trump’s conviction.
