BALTIMORE— Maryland Supreme Court has upheld an appeals court’s decision to reinstate Adnan Syed’s murder conviction.
The case gained national attention in 2014 when it was discussed on the first season of the podcast “Serial.”
The ruling also says the case must go back to a lower court for a new hearing on whether it should be dismissed entirely. The decision reverses a lower court ruling that cleared Syed’s name two years ago.
The judges ruled that the court had violated the rights of Young Lee, the brother of the murdered Hae Min Lee.
Hae Min Lee’s family argued that their rights had been violated because they were not properly notified to attend the hearing in person.
“In attempting to right what they saw as an injustice to Mr Syed, the prosecutor and the court wronged Mr Lee,” the court said.
The ruling returns the case to the state it was in before a Baltimore judge overturned Syed’s conviction and released him from prison.
Syed served more than 20 years in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999.
