HANOVER – A Hanover woman is speaking out about the possible dangers of a popular Christmas gift this year. Tabletop fire pits are at the top of internet gift lists, but Katelyn Little is sounding the alarm after a scary experience in July.
“I just want to raise awareness and let people know they are dangerous and what could potentially happen,” Little said.
Second and third degree burns
Little was given a fire pit on the table over the summer, and just after he set it up, it burst into flames and set her on fire. She jumped into her backyard pool to put out the flames.
She ended up in the hospital for four days, unable to move with second- and third-degree burns all over her body.
“I was treated there by the burn unit for a total of four days. With daily dressing changes and soaks and I didn’t get out of bed for four days. I couldn’t walk,” Little said. “It was just horrible.”
Warning before the holidays
Little originally didn’t plan to share her story, but then she noticed something while she was shopping for the holidays.
“When I search for Yankee swap gifts under $30, this is pretty much the number one gift that comes up right now,” Little said. “A lot of different companies make them.”
Little said she has read several stories similar to hers. Earlier this year one A couple from New Hampshire was killed after their fire pit exploded.
Katelyn is hopeful that she can help protect others by sharing her story.
“A few people have said, ‘Oh my God, I just bought one, now I’m not going to use it,’ so they’re aware and they’re grateful that I’m sharing my story,” Little said.
