Matthieu Pavon reveals what Bryson DeChambeau told him after he didn’t come out

Matthieu Pavon did the right thing.

At least that’s what Bryson DeChambeau told Pavon when he scored Sunday night at Pinehurst No. 2, just moments after DeChambeau rolled a par putt from 3 feet and changed on the 18th green to win the U.S. Open — and Pavon DeChambeau was followed by his 10-footer clearing for par to finish solo fifth.

When Pavon marked his ball instead of setting out to clear the stage for DeChambeau, many spectators began booing Pavon. That prompted DeChambeau to quiet the crowd before going through his routine.

Pavon told Barstool’s Dan Rapaport that he thought he needed to get a par to secure a spot in all of next year’s majors. That wasn’t the case, although Pavon did save himself an extra $50,000 by making the putt.

DeChambeau celebrated after sinking his putt and then sat down briefly so Pavon could finish.

Pavon would quickly apologize to DeChambeau, saying, “Bryson, I’m really sorry, dude. I probably should have finished it.”

DeChambeau, however, was having none of it and explained to Pavon that an apology was not necessary.

As Pavon recalled, “He said, ‘Dude, you did the right thing. It’s important to you. … Thank you [for] I’m not doing it because you would have shown me the line, and I don’t think it’s fair to Rory [McIlroy]and I don’t want to win it that way. ”
