Mavericks could sign Tim Hardaway Jr. and trading 3 second round picks to Pistons for Quentin Grimes

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Dallas Mavericks are trading Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Quentin Grimes.

Hardway Jr., 32, has spent the past six seasons with the Mavericks after joining from the New York Knicks as part of the Kristaps Porziņģis trade in January 2019. He is under contract through next season and owed $16.2 million. He averaged 14.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game during the regular season.

Grimes, 24, played parts of his first three NBA seasons with the Knicks before being sent to Detroit in February. Due to injuries, he played only six games with the Pistons after the trade. He is entitled to $4.3 million as he enters the final season of his rookie contract.

While the Pistons are signing to acquire future draft picks, the Mavericks are clearing space under the salary cap to prepare their next move.

According to ESPN’s Tim McMahon, that next step will see the Mavericks signing Derrick Jones Jr. offering a “significant portion” of the $12.9 million exception for mid-level non-taxpayers. Dallas General Manager Nico Harrison said last week that re-signing the 27-year-old forward was at the top of his offseason to-do list.

“I don’t know how we’re going to do it, but he’s a priority… He’s a priority one, 1A and 1B,” Harrison said. “I think he’s a good fit for our team. He loves it here and we obviously have to figure out the dynamics to get him to stay. But that’s a priority and we’ll do what we have to do to make it happen.”

Jones is the only player in the Mavericks’ rotation not signed for the 2024-25 NBA season.
