Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) announced Wednesday that he is running to become co-chair of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee. If elected, he would be the first Gen Z member to hold a leadership role in Congress.
The panel is responsible for crafting and promoting a messaging strategy that communicates Democrats’ priorities in the House of Representatives.
Frost launched his bid after it became clear that Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) would not seek re-election as one of the co-chairs. Meanwhile, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) is competing against Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) to become chair of the committee.
In a letter addressed to his Democratic colleagues, first reported by Axios, Frost, who became the first Gen Z member of Congress after winning his 2022 race, expressed confidence that he knows what the party needs to do to effectively convey its vision of the future. for Americans across the country.
“I plan to bring one of my office’s founding principles to the entire caucus – the idea that to be effective communicators, we must try to bridge the gap between calm and awareness and not provide any form of communication to our Republican counterparts have to give up,” he said. . “That we should try not to use the culture, but to be part of it and shape it ourselves.”
Frost, 27, laid out a three-point plan as part of his campaign for the role, including a pitch to create a digital media booking program that would allow members to connect with non-traditional media such as content creators and artists.
“This election has made clear how important it is to not only combat the conservative echo chamber of digital platforms, but also create our own echo chamber to advance our message and your priorities,” Frost said.
Frost also said he could provide training and production guidance to voters on how to organize events that serve as an effective platform for community outreach, citing his experience producing major music festivals and his work as a former staffer and venue manager of the presidential campaign. .
The Gen Z congressman also promised to plan workshops to help members create their brand and come up with their own style and writing guide.
“Good branding can be simple and easy to create while making a difference in how your constituents see you and our message as a whole,” he said.
