Melania Trump suggests conspiracy behind attempted assassination of her husband as part of book promotion

  • Melania Trump suggested there was a conspiracy behind the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

  • “There is definitely more to this story and we need to find out the truth,” she said in a video promoting her book.

  • Donald Trump was hit in the ear by a bullet in July after a gunman opened fire at his rally.

In a video promoting her new book, Melania Trump suggested that the assassination attempt on her husband, former President Donald Trump, was part of some kind of conspiracy.

“Attempting to end my husband’s life was a horrific, stressful experience,” the former first lady said in the cryptic 34-second video she posted to her X account on Tuesday.

She continued: “Now the silence around this feels heavy. I can’t help but wonder: Why didn’t law enforcement arrest the shooter before the speech? There is absolutely more to this story, and we need to find out the truth.”

The video then urged viewers to go to her website and pre-order her memoir, titled “Melania,” which will be released next month.

Representatives for Melania Trump did not immediately respond to a request from Business Insider for comment on her remarks and whether her new book addresses the attempted assassination of her husband.

The former first lady has largely stayed out of the 2024 campaign. She skipped Trump’s June debate with President Joe Biden, which eventually led the president to withdraw from the race altogether. She did attend the final night of the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, though unlike in 2016 and 2020, she did not deliver a speech.

The video was released just hours before Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump faces off against Democratic rival Vice President Kamala Harris in their first presidential debate.

The former president was struck in the ear by a bullet on July 13 after 20-year-old gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire while the former president was delivering a speech at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The gunman, who was eventually shot dead by the Secret Service, fired eight rounds from a rooftop minutes into the meeting, bleeding an ear, killing one attendee and wounding two others.

Some right-wing Trump supporters have spread conspiracy theories about the assassination attempt, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia. Greene accused the Democratic Party of trying to “assassinate President Trump” in the aftermath of the assassination.

The FBI said late last month that it still had not identified Crooks’ motive. That hasn’t stopped Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, from pushing the boundaries by saying an unspecified “they” tried to kill Donald Trump.

Following the incident, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned after intense investigation and calls for her to do the same.

Cheatle testified before Congress that the assassination attempt was “the greatest operational failure by the Secret Service in decades.”

There are multiple investigations into the assassination attempt, including a bipartisan task force of House lawmakers. Donald Trump has resumed holding outdoor rallies, speaking behind bulletproof glass. He has repeatedly said he would like to return to Butler for a pre-election rally.
