The Copa America has reached the quarter-finals and most of the big names are still in the running, including Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay, as they try to reach the knockout stages.

But the United States, which is hosting the tournament, has been eliminated and the tournament is not going smoothly for all teams.

A few underdogs have also managed to secure a spot in the last eight and will be looking to spring even more surprises.

With the quarter-finals just around the corner, BBC Sport brings you the stories to expect from America’s biggest tournament.

Copa America quarter finals matches

Friday (02:00 BST): Argentina v Ecuador

Saturday (02:00): Venezuela vs Canada

Saturday (23:00): Colombia vs Panama

Sunday (02:00): Uruguay v Brazil

Bielsa ensures Nunez is sacked

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez played a key role in helping Uruguay secure a maximum of nine points in the group stage and reach the last eight.

He played in each of their three matches, scoring in the 3–1 win over Panama and the 5–0 victory over Bolivia.

Uruguay face a tough opponent in Brazil, but are technically strong under former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa. Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde impresses.

Uruguay defeated the USA and eliminated them in the group stage. Can they beat one of the favorites in their next match?

Can Messi shine?

Argentina star Lionel Messi may be playing in his last major tournament but struggled in an injury-plagued group stage.

The 36-year-old played in his team’s victories against Canada and Chile, but was forced to miss the match against Peru due to a groin injury.

For the first time at the Copa America, Messi failed to score in the group stage, although he did provide an assist in Argentina’s opening 2-0 win over Canada.

But Messi has since returned to training and the World Cup holder is still the big favourite to make it through.

Against Ecuador, whom they beat 1-0 in a friendly in June, Lionel Scaloni’s team are expected to win.

The big question remains: will Messi finally find his form?

Can Brazil survive without Vinicius Jr.?

It has been a frustrating tournament for Brazil, and Vinicius Jr.’s suspension for the quarter-finals will not help them.

The five-time world champions were defeated by Colombia in the final group stage and Vinicius was ruled out of the first knockout match after receiving his second yellow card.

Vinicius is Brazil’s top scorer at the Copa America with two goals, while Real team-mate Rodrygo has struggled in front of goal.

This Brazilian team is strong and could have the players to recover from the loss of Vinicius, but they need to be used. Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli is stuck on the bench.

Brazil must take responsibility or risk losing to a Uruguayan team that is running at full speed.

Canada shows strength

This is Canada’s debut in the Copa America, the first regular edition to feature teams from outside South America.

Six of the sixteen teams come from the Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean (Concacaf).

Under Jesse Marsch, another former Leeds manager, Canada, who will co-host the 2026 World Cup with the US and Mexico, have done something neighbours such as the US have failed to do by reaching the knockout stages.

Lille striker Jonathan David is one of their biggest threats, although Canada struggled for goals in the group stage. David scored their only goal in a 1-0 win over Peru, while they lost 2-0 to Argentina and drew 0-0 with Chile.

Is another surprise coming for Panama?

Panama were the surprise of the Copa America and exceeded expectations in the group stage.

They defeated the United States and Bolivia to finish second in their group, facing Colombia in the quarter-finals.

Going one step further may be too much to ask of the underdogs. Colombia, who topped their group and drew with Brazil, have Liverpool’s Luis Diaz and former Real midfielder James Rodriguez in their team.

Crystal Palace’s Jefferson Lerma has also played a key role in midfield. They are a talented team and outperform Panama on paper.

Colombia is expected to win, but the Panamanian team that has proven its sceptics wrong will not make reaching the semi-finals easy.
