Metro Detroit is experiencing power outages and storm damage after severe weather

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) — The Village of Beverly Hills The state of emergency remained in effect on Fridayhandle widespread power outages and significant damage to trees of Wednesday’s storm.

Beverly Hills Police closed a portion of Beverly Road west of Southfield Road so crews could clear the roadway and remove dangerous limbs.

“We really thought it was a tornado, just scary. It’s a disaster area here,” said Beverly Hills resident Stacie Millichamp.

It has kept Millichamp and her neighbors in cleaning mode for the past 48 hours, pruning trees and taking branches to the curb so they can be chipped in the coming weeks.

“We cleared the street as much as we could, trying to get security trucks and DTE trucks through,” Millichamp said. “It was quite a challenge, but the community was great. Everyone worked together and helped each other.”

A portion of 13 Mile Road between Southfield and Evergreen remains closed due to a downed power line.

The Beverly Park Trail is temporarily closed as fallen trees and branches are scattered throughout the park.

“As soon as the storm hit, crews were out assessing the damage and started clearing the roads. Then DTE was there a few hours after they started assessing the damage,” said Village Manager Jeff Campbell .

Village leaders said that, weather permitting, DTE expects power to be restored to almost all residents by Saturday. There are at least 100 power crews in the area.

“We lost limbs here and there. That was it for us. We were lucky,” said resident Bill Donnelly.

Under the state of emergency, cars are not allowed to park on the streets so crews can safely access power lines and trees.

In the coming days, the village will determine how much the state and federal government can contribute to cleanup costs.
