Metropolitan Community College evacuates after suspicious package threat

A community college in Kansas City was briefly evacuated Wednesday afternoon when police responded to reports of a suspicious package near a campus building.

According to MCC campus police, the package was spotted outside the Broadway Plaza building of Metropolitan Community College’s Penn Valley campus, located at 3217 Broadway Blvd.

Just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, students were ordered to evacuate the building through the back entrance. The threat did not actually take place on campus grounds, the spokesperson said.

Because the alert occurred at the end of the workday and near a non-academic building, few students and employees were directly affected by the evacuation notice, an MCC spokesperson said Friday afternoon.

MCC students received the clear message Wednesday at 5:12 p.m. that they should return to campus. However, Kansas City police are still investigating the package and the area, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a KCPD spokesman.

Several blocks of Broadway Boulevard were closed late Wednesday afternoon as MCC police and Kansas City police conducted an investigation.
