Mets’ Pete Alonso asks if he can get Sunday Roast in London on a day other than Sunday

If Pete Alonso seems a little sleepy when the New York Mets take on the Philadelphia Phillies in the two-game MLB London Series this weekend, he might be working on a food coma after sampling the best food and drinks the city has to offer . .

Meeting with reporters on Friday after the team’s practice, Alonso had more on his mind than facing the first-place Phillies and projected starting pitchers Ranger Suarez and Taijuan Walker. The All-Star first baseman wanted to make sure he sampled some of London’s best before hopping on a plane back to New York.

After enjoying a “real pint of Guinness” at a team dinner in a pub the night before, Alonso asked reporters if he could find a traditional Sunday roast on Friday or Saturday.

“We’re leaving on Sunday unfortunately, so I know Sunday roasts are a thing,” Alonso said. “Are they served somewhere specifically on Sundays or can you get this at any time, like a London Roast? And what’s your top recommendation?”

The consensus was that Alonso could find a Sunday roast at any time, but one reporter did suggest “having as much gravy as possible”.

“I think you can have one at any time,” a reporter replied, sounding somewhat unsure, although he emphasized to Alonso: “All I would say is, just have as much gravy as you can.”

The media gathered gave several suggestions for the best place to get the meal of roast beef, lamb, chicken or pork with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and vegetables, along with the aforementioned gravy.

Perhaps overwhelmed, Alonso then asked where he could get the best fish and chips, about which reporters had many opinions. Someone saved him by asking if he wanted to eat mushy peas during his visit.

“Yes, if that’s something, yes, certainly,” Alonso said, and his apparent reluctance drew a laugh.

Reporters were much more definitive when teammate Sean Manaea asked for chocolate suggestions and was emphatically told that Cadbury chocolate was better than Hershey’s.

According to the British press, non-chocolate snacks should include Monster Munch and fruit lozenges. So keep an eye out for those in the Mets dugout or bullpen this weekend. At least some of those players have food on their minds.
