Mexico plays its second match of the 2024 Copa América against Venezuela on Wednesday (9 p.m. ET, FS1/Univision) in an undoubtedly sold-out SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
El Tri opened their tournament series Saturday night with a bittersweet win over Jamaica at NRG Stadium in Houston. Mexico secured a 1–0 victory thanks to a Gerardo Arteaga goal in the 69th minute, but lost Edson Álvarez to injury in his first match with the captain’s armband for El Tri. Alvarez confirmed on social media on Tuesday that his tournament is over as the West Ham star will focus on rehabilitating his injured leg.
Venezuela faced no such obstacles in the tournament opener against Ecuador. La Vinotinto secured a somewhat surprising 2-1 victory after Ecuador captain Enner Valencia was shown a red card for a dangerous play in the penalty area, with his cleat making contact with the face of Philadelphia Union’s Jose Martinez. With one man behind, Ecuador conceded two goals in the second half.
Wednesday’s match won’t necessarily decide which team advances to the knockout stages, but a win for either side would be a huge advantage heading into the final group stage. The runner-up in Group B will face the winner of Group A, most likely Argentina. So a win for either Mexico or Venezuela on Wednesday would go a long way toward deciding who the reigning World Cup champions will have to avoid in the quarter-finals.
