Police have identified the body of an elderly man who was found in a Miami Springs alley with a “blunt force trauma” wound shortly before the historic city celebrated July 4.
On July 4, Miami-Dade Fire Department officials were called to the scene of an accident that found “a man lying on the ground and bleeding,” according to a Miami-Dade police report released to police. Herald on thursday.
“About 6:42 a.m. [on July 4]Miami Springs Police Department officers were dispatched to the area of NW 36th Street and Miller Drive in reference to the discovery of a body in an alley, MDPD Detective Argemis Colome said in a statement.
The fatal victim has been identified as Fermin Alvarez, 74, police said. An official cause of death has not been released. Police have released few details about the case.
Alvarez owned a home in the 600 block of Miller Drive, according to the Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser’s Office. His body was found about a block from his home, according to police.
A K-9 detective conducted a firearm detection “sniff” of the area, but the report does not list the results. The MDPD’s Homicide Bureau is handling the investigation.
Crime Along Miami Springs’ Northwest 36and Miami Springs leaders say the street grid has widened. In 2021, they voted unanimously to restrict “immoral behavior” along a five-block stretch of Northwest 36th Street with eight-foot-high border fencing.
In 2013, Miami Springs annexed land near Miami International Airport and created an “adult entertainment district.” In an effort to lower property taxes, the city approved more than 20 new hotels, resulting in an increase in crime, including shootings, rapes and drug dealing.
Last June the Herald reported that two people suspected of being members of the Sinaloa Cartel have been charged in connection with the execution-style killing of a man at a nearby Miami Springs hotel in 2022.
