(CBS DETROIT) – Two Michigan men were rescued Thursday night after their boat partially sank in an accident on Lake Erie, officials said.
At 11:26 p.m., Monroe County Central Dispatch received multiple reports of a boat sinking at the entrance to Bolles Harbor with people in the water.
When officers and firefighters arrived on the scene, they found a 62-year-old man and his 38-year-old son clinging to rocks near the Hoffman Memorial Fishing Pier. They rescued them from the water.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the two men were in a 1983 26-foot Chris-Craft boat when, for unknown reasons, the boat struck the sea wall at channel marker #10 while attempting to enter the harbor.
“The hull of the boat was torn and the boat partially sank in the canal,” the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.
The two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
According to police, speed and alcohol played a role in the accident.
The investigation is still ongoing.
