Michigan unemployment claims rose last week

The number of jobless claims in Michigan rose last week compared to the previous week, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.

New claims for unemployment benefits, a proxy for layoffs, rose to 5,496 in the week through Sept. 14, up from 4,729 the week before, the Labor Department said.

U.S. jobless claims fell to 219,000 last week, down 12,000 from 231,000 claims the previous week, after seasonal adjustment.

Alaska saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing 46.1%. Nebraska, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage decrease in new claims, with claims dropping 44.2%.
