Migrant boat capsizes off coast of Italy, leaving about 20 people missing

ROME (AP) — About two dozen migrants are missing after their boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea this week, the U.N. refugee agency said Wednesday.

Seven Syrians were rescued and taken to the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, the Italian coast guard said.

Chiara Cardoletti, the UNHCR representative in Italy, said on X that the seven survivors “were in critical condition and many have lost their relatives.”

According to the Italian news agency ANSA, survivors said they left Libya on September 1 and that the accident occurred after one day of sailing.

According to survivors, 20 people are missing, including three children.
