Military procession for fallen soldier stretches from O’Hare to Merrillville, Indiana

MERRILLVILLE, Indiana (CBS) — An impressive military procession was held in the Chicago area Monday evening for U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Brandon Lee Fassoth.

Fassoth, 27, of Merrillville, died June 18 while on active duty. He was 27.

The Illinois Patriot Guard led the procession, which began at O’Hare International Airport and went all the way to the Calumet Park Funeral Chapel in Merrillville. The procession made its way through Indiana along Route 30.

According to witness testimony, the Indiana Patriot Guard took over at Dyer City Hall and a flag was raised over the procession in Schererville, Indiana.

People lined the route to honor the fallen soldier.

According to his obituary, Fassoth enlisted in the Indiana Army National Guard during his sophomore year at Merrillville High School and completed his training as an infantryman in 2015, the same year he graduated.

According to the obituary, Fassoth was assigned to the 2-151 Infantry Regiment of the Indiana Army National Guard, the Headquarters Support Company at the U.S. Army Training Center at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and the U.S. Army Center for Initial Military Training at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

“Brandon loved being an infantryman, training and mentoring soldiers, and all aspects of life as a soldier in the United States Army,” the obituary reads. “Brandon enjoyed hiking, reading, and spending time with his cat, Fireball. He traveled the country seeking new hiking adventures and remote locations to photograph. He loved being around family and friends, having conversations and laughing. Fireball was his best furry friend, whom he loved dearly. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and was working on his master’s degree. During his military career, he completed multiple military training programs, including Air Assault and Joint Forces Leader Development.”

The obituary does not mention how Fassoth died.
