ELKHART — Elkhart High School senior Declan Millslagle was selected as the winner of the National Merit Scholarship.

The official announcement was made on May 9 during one of Millslagle’s classes.

“I was very impressed with him,” Larry Huff, superintendent of Elkhart Community Schools, said recently at a school board meeting. “I was impressed by his peers who celebrated him while he was there for his family – his sister who flew in from Arizona State and his mother who sent several children to Elkhart. She could not have been more proud of the educational experience her child had at school.”

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition among high school students for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. The program is administered by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a nonprofit organization that operates without government support.

Millslagle is one of approximately 7,140 National Merit Scholarship recipients nationwide. Approximately 1.3 million students entered the 2024 competition last school year by taking the 2022 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The test serves as an initial screening for program participants.
