Milwaukee man accused of driving a vehicle without a license, causing the death of a 2-year-old boy

A 41-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged in connection with last week’s collision that killed 2-year-old Angelo Berry.

Laron B. Lawrence was charged Monday with knowingly operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license causing death.

According to a criminal complaint, Angelo climbed out of an open window left open in an apartment where he lived and then walked onto the road.

Witnesses told police they saw an SUV driving southbound on 60th Street near West Hustis Street when Angelo suddenly appeared in the road in front of the SUV. Witnesses said the SUV braked and swerved, but appeared unable to avoid Angelo. Lawrence stopped after the collision and remained at the scene.

Lawrence admitted to not having a valid driver’s license, the complaint said. He appeared in court Monday, where bail was set at $2,000.

A 25-year-old man was also arrested for child neglect, Milwaukee police said.

Angelo Berry, 2, died in a crash on Wednesday.

Shirley Stahl, Angelo’s great-grandmother, wrote in a message to the Journal Sentinel last week that the two-year-old “was full of life, smart and eager to learn everything. He loved his parents and brother so much.”
