MINNEAPOLIS — Fall colors in Minnesota may be a little less striking this year due to the excessive humidity this summer.

On Friday, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources released its fall color forecast for 2024. Here’s what you need to know.

When are the fall colors best in Minnesota?

According to the DNR, fall colors are typically at their best between mid/late September and mid-October.

The colors will begin to change in the northwestern part of the state and then move into the southeastern corner of the state.

Although it depends on the location and the weather, the most beautiful autumn colours usually remain visible in one place for about two weeks.

“Fall colors are stunning when early fall days are sunny, nights are cool and there is adequate rainfall throughout the growing season,” said Brian Schwingle, DNR forest health specialist.

Last year around this time, In some parts of Minnesota, there was already talk of changing colors.

According to the DNR’s fall color chart, colors won’t change much this year until next Wednesday. Fall colors are expected to take over completely by the end of the month.

How colorful will autumn be this year?

DNR officials say the intensity of fall colors may be diminished due to the amount of moisture that fell this summer.

Although moisture is good for trees, it also promotes fungal diseases in leaves, including poplars and oaks.

According to the DNR, it’s not a concern for the tree’s health, but the diseases “can diminish the overall luster of the landscape” due to premature leaf drop and the development of dead spots or blotches on the leaves.

Tips for finding fall colors

The DNR’s Fall Color Finder is a good place to start. The tool helps the public track fall colors across the state.

“The DNR’s fall color map has proven to be reliable in recent years,” Schwingle said. “An earlier, lighter frost will push the peak of fall colors earlier in the fall color window, so pay attention to the weather forecast if you can be flexible with your travel plans. Regardless of conditions, there should be plenty of beautiful foliage to enjoy.”

You can also sign up for weekly updates, read visitor notifications, and view seasonal updates on the DNR website.

“Always check local weather forecasts and bring appropriate clothing and footwear,” the DNR says.

The DNR says to expect crowds at state parks and recreation areas, especially on weekends. They also recommend bringing binoculars or seeing if you can borrow them at a state park ranger station.

Of course, it’s a good idea to bring a camera so you can capture the beautiful views. You can also submit those photos to be posted on the DNR’s fall color website.

Don’t forget to send those beautiful fall color photos to WCCO too! They could be featured in a news broadcast or on our digital channels.
