The appreciation burned brightly for Montgomery firefighters on Friday.
The people who would walk into an inferno to save lives, and the department personnel who worked with them, were honored for their efforts during the third annual Employee Appreciation Day at Fire/Rescue headquarters. It was Fire Chief Milford Jordan’s way of recognizing all they have done for the department over the past year.
“We’re just really trying to show some appreciation to our employees and just let them know that their work doesn’t go unnoticed,” Assistant Fire Chief SL Cooper said.
The MFR cooking team – consisting of Assistant Fire Chief Daryl Thornton, Captain Quinton Robinson, Captain Thavone Phengphanh, Captain Travis Varner and District Fire Chief Matt Morgan – worked with fire to grill for everyone, as well as making side dishes and desserts. MFR members prepared and served the meal.
It was a festive working day.
Just after 3 p.m. Friday, MFR responded to a house fire in the 300 block of Truett Drive. Heavy smoke was visible in the one-story home and firefighters responded. They searched the building and extinguished the flames with hand lines. That fire is under investigation. Fortunately, no one was injured – civilians or firefighters – and the MFR folks returned to wait for their next call.
Cooper said the rest of the day was thankfully quite uneventful.
“We appreciate their contributions to the team every day and their efforts inspire us and we are grateful for the exceptional work in the community,” Montgomery Fire/Rescue wrote on social media Friday.
