More details released about man killed in Cobb County police officer-involved shooting

We now know more about what led to the deadly officer-involved shooting in Cobb County.

According to investigators, the murdered man not only had multiple arrest warrants, but had also run away from officers during a traffic stop in recent weeks.

Cobb County Police Chief Stuart Vanhoozer said Monday that several warrants have been issued for the arrest of Nathain Jenkins, 32, including for failing to appear on a felon in possession of a firearm charge in Fulton County.

“There is another warrant for arrest for violation of probation for cocaine and there is another warrant for obstruction of an officer,” VanHoozer said.

Jenkins was shot and killed late Friday night at a Walgreens store on Cobb Parkway.

Officers followed him into the store, a scuffle ensued and Jenkins was shot by the officers.

According to the GBI, they did indeed find a weapon.

However, Cobb County police said Friday night’s interaction was a follow-up to a traffic stop a few weeks ago.

“And that individual ran away and we did not pursue that individual beyond a certain point because of our pursuit policy,” VanHoozer said. “We believe there is a connection between that pursuit and this individual.”

While the GBI leads the investigation, Cobb County police said they will investigate whether the Walgreens shooting was appropriate.

“There are all sorts of arguments that could be made that it would be a very bad decision to release him in a place where there are more people, there’s a bar nearby with a lot of people,” VanHoozer added.

Channel 2 Action News heard from a friend of Jenkins that Jenkins had his hands up and that he had never pointed a gun at officers.

The chief said the GBI is reviewing the details of the events leading up to the shooting.
