(CBS-DETROIT) – The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced that additional lanes are needed on the Southfield Freeway in Dearborn and Allen Park due to a new work zone safety law, officials said.

The change will require two lanes of Southfield Freeway to be closed in both directions from Pinecrest Drive, south of I-94, to Ford Road.

The new law requires a work zone to have a concrete barrier when crews are working on a project at night. Because there is no room for this at Southfield, an additional lane closure is necessary. During this project, crews will perform concrete repairs, milling and concrete resurfacing.

Beginning Friday, June 7 at 8:00 PM and continuing through Tuesday, June 11, one lane will be open on northbound M-39 from I-94 to Ford Road.

Then, starting June 14, up to two lanes on the Southfield Freeway from I-94 to Ford Road will be closed in both directions.

MDOT officials say drivers should expect delays during the closure, allow extra time to reach their destination or take an alternate route.
