More than 100 illegal firecrackers discovered during Woodland police search

During a crackdown in preparation for the Fourth of July holiday, detectives working with Cal Fire searched two homes in Woodland, finding more than 100 pieces of illegal fireworks.

Thursday’s operation resulted in the discovery of 120 illegal “airborne” mortars at one of the homes, according to a Woodland Police Department news release. Photos provided by the department showed several boxes marketed as “Neon Skies” multipacks with “60G max load.”

The artillery-style firework kit sells online for about $145 each and is also sold in other states, according to retailers. A warning on the box states that each pyrotechnic “shoots out flaming balls with bangs,” known as explosions after the initial blast.

“The full investigation is ongoing and an arrest is likely based on the total weight of the fireworks,” officers said in the statement. “In addition to the arrest, the offender will be issued a $120,000 fine based on the new $1,000 per device change in the city ordinance.”

Officers stressed the increased danger of fireworks during the heat wave, which is expected to last through Sunday.

“Please share this information as widely as possible. With extreme heat and wind forecast for the coming week, it is even more important to keep this 4th of July safe and healthy,” they said, referring to legal fireworks with the state fire marshal’s seal.

Officials said residents can report illegal or misused fireworks activities to the police department’s non-emergency hotline at 530-666-2411. In life-threatening emergencies, residents are urged to call 911.
