NEW YORK – The MTA says it has made dozens of arrests and issued hundreds of citations in a crackdown false plates and toll evaders.

The joint operation lasted eleven days.

Authorities have seized hundreds of vehicles as part of more than a dozen joint enforcement operations.

The defendants had amassed more than $996,000 in unpaid tolls, fees, judgments and debts.

The MTA says the operation is part of an “accelerated” crackdown on ghost plates.

The MTA advises that people can avoid violation fees and suspensions by paying their bills on time and using E-ZPass. The agency reminds people that it is illegal to have any form of covering that hides or distorts an image of a license plate.

Lawmakers in New York want to crack down on fake license plates

Congestion pricing will go into effect in New York City on June 30, assuming this is the case a whole series of lawsuits does not thwart or delay the plan.

Ahead of the introduction of congestion pricing, New York City Councilman Bob Holden is among those calling for a further action against devices which can cover license plates and mask and unmask them on the license plate in less than a second. The devices cost up to $195.

“Law enforcement is so busy with other things that this isn’t a priority yet, but it should be,” Holden said. “We really need our laws to catch up.”

He wants people caught using the devices to lose their licenses.
