Dec. 1 – MONROE, SD – A 39-year-old man died in a head-on collision Tuesday morning 10 miles northeast of Monroe.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, preliminary crash information indicates that Michael Lee Zimmer, the driver of a 2012 Volkswagen CC Sport, was traveling eastbound on SD Highway 42 near the intersection of 454th Ave. when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided. head-on with an approaching tanker truck.
Zimmer, of Monroe, died at the scene from his injuries. The tanker driver, Daniel J. Bannwarth, 52, of Mitchell, was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:58 a.m. near mile marker 345.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
