‘National issue’ affecting mobile service between carriers has been resolved, AT&T says

A “nationwide issue” Tuesday that affected talks between airlines has been resolved, AT&T said.

“The interoperability issue between carriers has been resolved. We have worked with the other carrier to find a resolution and appreciate our customers’ patience during this time,” the company said in a statement around 7:45 p.m. Eastern Time.

Calls to 911 and between customers of the same carrier, such as AT&T to AT&T, were not affected, AT&T said. Text messaging was not affected, nor was the FirstNet wireless broadband network for first responders, the report said.

The carrier previously said it was working closely with Verizon to address the issue. The problem was not a nationwide outage, but rather “a nationwide issue affecting some customers’ ability to complete calls between carriers,” AT&T said at the time.

Verizon had said its network was operating normally, but “some customers, primarily in the Northeast and Midwest, are experiencing difficulty calling or texting customers served by another carrier.”

The Federal Communications Commission said it is investigating the matter.

“We are aware of reports that consumers in multiple states are unable to make wireless phone calls and we are currently investigating,” the FCC said. posted a statement on X.

It is not clear how many customers are involved.

Some vented their frustration by supporting accounts on X. One messaged Verizon and complained, “I pay too much not to make calls.”

“What is going on with you guys today! My phone has decided to stop making outgoing calls. It says it can’t connect,” another customer told AT&T on the social media platform.

The disruption occurred just over three months after a widespread outage hit AT&T customers, leaving people without service. Approximately 50,000 acts of violence were reported at one point during that incident. The company said at the time that the problem was caused by a process error.

The website Downdetector noted a spike in the number of reported outages for both AT&T and Verizon on Tuesday.

T-Mobile said there was no outage, but the issues with other carriers could impact customers trying to connect to other networks.
