NBA Draft 2024: Live updates, grades and results from Round 2 as Bronny James tops players available on Day 2

The dust has settled on the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft, with French prospect Zaccharie Risacher going No. 1 overall to the Atlanta Hawks. Now attention turns to the second round, which is normally a spot for developmental prospects. Round 2 of the NBA Draft now has its own day and the amount of time teams have to make their picks has increased from two minutes in previous years to four minutes per selection.

Yahoo Sports’ Krysten Peek has you covered with the top available prospects remaining in the second round, and among the group is USC freshman Bronny James. The son of NBA legend LeBron James is sure to make headlines when (or if?) he’s drafted after averaging 4.8 points per game at USC following his cardiac arrest in the summer of 2023.

  • Could Bronny James Be Used as Merchandise?

There are still several intriguing names available for Day 2 of the 2024 NBA Draft, but the biggest storyline will likely be where Bronny James goes.

The story could be short and simple if the Los Angeles Lakers select the 19-year-old at No. 55 and end up playing him with his father, LeBron James. However, there is the possibility of some drama, complications, and even pettiness if Bronny is drafted. Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel outlined one of the juicier scenarios in his latest column:

If Bronny isn’t selected by Thursday afternoon, wouldn’t it make sense if you’re the Boston Celtics, who are ranked 54, to take him away from the Lakers and demand a 2025 second-round pick (or even a player or more picks) in return? After all, the Lakers are the only franchise with extra reason to value him.

Presumably a second-round pick next year is better than the 55th pick in the worst draft in decades. Plus, you’d be bothering your archrival. What is the risk? This could be ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, despite the shoppy stuff.

Imagine Bronny James as a key figure in a new chapter in the vaunted Lakers-Celtics rivalry. “LeBron’s Son Held Hostage by NBA Champions!” Stay tuned.

  • Houston Rockets sign AJ Griffin from Atlanta

The Atlanta Hawks are sending forward AJ Griffin to the Houston Rockets, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. In return, the Hawks will receive the 44th pick in today’s draft.

  • Oklahoma City sends Lindy Waters III to Golden State

In another trading day, Oklahoma City is sending Lindy Waters III to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for the No. 52 pick, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

  • Detroit and Minnesota complete the trade ahead of the second round

The first trade of Day 2 of the NBA Draft is here, with the Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly signing guard Wendell Moore Jr. and the no. 37 pick to the Detroit Pistons, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. In return, Detroit gives the Timberwolves the No. 53 pick.

  • NBA champion Boston Celtics closed out the first round with the selection of Baylor Scheierman

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Concept figure: a

    • Ranking before the draft: 32

    • School: Creighton

    • Height: 6′ 7″

    • Weight: 205

Scheierman’s shot creation and size as a perimeter player are what set him up in the first round. He is a four-year player from Creighton and averaged 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game as a senior.

  • The first USC player is off the board — not Bronny James — but Isaiah Collier, who goes to the Utah Jazz with the 29th pick

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Concept figure: A-

    • Position before draft: 18

    • School: USC

    • Height: 1.95 m

    • Weight: 210

The fact that Collier fell so far into the draft after entering last college season as the No. 1 recruit out of high school is shocking. The biggest gap in his game has been his perimeter jumper and turnovers during his one year at USC. Where he does excel is in the open court, and he has great body control around the rim. With the spacing and pace of the NBA game, he could be a steal for the Jazz.

  • ACC All-Defense selection Ryan Dunn of Virginia heads to Phoenix with the No. 28 pick

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Concept figure: b

    • Pre-draft rankings: 41

    • School: Virginia

    • Height: 6′ 8″

    • Weight: 216

Dunn was the best perimeter defender in college basketball this season at 6-foot-8 and averaged 2.3 blocks and just under two steals per game during his second season at Virginia. The biggest hole in his game is his 3-point shooting, where he has made just 20% of his attempts from long range this season.

  • Terrence Shannon Jr. from Illinois left for Minnesota

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Concept figure: A

    • Pre-draft rankings: 33

    • School: Illinois

    • Height: 6′ 6″

    • Weight: 225

Shannon is a three-level scorer who has improved his three-point shot over the course of his college career, finishing his senior season at Illinois shooting 36.2% from deep. He is an older, veteran guard at 23 years old who can come in right away and contribute for Minnesota.

  • The 26th pick is Dillon Jones from Weber State (shoutout Dame Time) and he’s going to Oklahoma City

  • Pacome Dadiet goes to the Knicks at No. 25, the 4th French player picked in Round 1

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Concept figure: B+

    • Pre-draft rankings: 22

    • School: France

    • Height: 6′ 8″

    • Weight: 210

Dadiet is one of the youngest players in the draft, still just 18 years old, and will be a draft-and-stash development project for the Knicks. His 6-foot-8 size and strength along the perimeter is what first stands out when he plays, and he shows more signs as a balanced wing playmaker, ending his season in Germany for Ratiopharm Ulm on a high.

  • Kyshawn George is drafted No. 24 overall and is headed to Washington

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Concept figure: B+

    • Pre-draft rankings: 11

    • School:Miami (FL)

    • Height: 6′ 8″

    • Weight: 205

George had a late growth spurt two years ago, ballooning from 6’1″ to 6’1″. He still passes like a point guard, but plays more on the perimeter. His three-point shot is most intriguing: he shot 41% from three off the bench during his one year with Miami.

  • With the 23rd pick, the Bucks selected AJ Johnson

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

Johnson’s potential as a 6-foot-5 combo guard is very intriguing, and he’s a player who’s been in the gym with Rockets guard Jalen Green since the eighth grade. They have similar playmaking quirks, and Johnson is still an inexperienced prospect who could emerge as one of the best players in this draft in two to three years.

  • After taking the 22nd pick, Phoenix traded the draft rights for DaRon Holmes II with Denver

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Concept figure: B+

    • Position before draft: 27

    • School: Dagton

    • Height: 6′ 10″

    • Weight: 235

Holmes could be one such hybrid player with his refined scoring ability and improved shot selection behind the three-point line, averaging 38.6% from the 3-point line.

  • Baylor big man Yves Missi is headed to New Orleans

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Concept figure: B+

    • Position before concept: 23

    • School: Baylor

    • Height: 7’0″

    • Weight: 235

Missi still has plenty of room to grow after his one year at Baylor, but the glimpses he showed defending the block and running the floor well in transition scream up there as a rim-running big in the NBA at 7-foot-10.

  • Well-traveled Cal’s Jaylon Tyson – after transferring from Texas to Texas Tech and then Cal – is heading to Cleveland

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Concept figure: A-

    • Position before concept: 28

    • School: California

    • Height: 6′ 7″

    • Weight: 215

Tyson was one of the best scorers in the Pac-12 and can do a little bit of everything very well. He’s strong on the ball, cuts well and finishes through contact, but his mobility on defense and ability to keep players in front of him needs some improvement.

  • Baylor’s 2023-24 leading scorer, Ja’Kobe Walter, left for Toronto at No. 19

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Concept figure: B+

    • Ranking before the draft: 19

    • School: Bay

    • Height: 6′ 5″

    • Weight: 195

Walter has solid length for a shooting guard at 6’5″ and showed promise off the bounce during his one year at Baylor. His 3-point shooting was a bit inconsistent during his first season at Baylor, but the spacing of the NBA should give him better looks for higher percentage shots.

  • Has it really been that long? 😬
