NBA Draft Grades: How Veteran No. 52 Pick Post Fits Into Warriors

NBA draft grades: How veteran No. 52 pick Post fits Warriors originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO – The Warriors seemingly sent the No. 52 overall pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder two hours before the start of the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft to acquire veteran guard Lindy Waters III.

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy then had us all playing mental gymnastics when after the 52nd pick was selected, it was announced that the Warriors had reacquired the roster, adding Boston College big man Quinten Post.

Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports was the first to report the news.

Anthony Slater of The Athletic subsequently reported, citing sources, that the Warriors were trading money for Post. The move limits the Warriors hard on the second platform.

If that all makes sense, let’s get back to the actual player.

Post is a 7-footer, originally from the Netherlands, who studied for five years. His first two were at Mississippi State before spending his last three at Boston College. It was his final two college seasons where the center stepped out of the post and expanded his range as a shooter.

Post shot 42.9 percent from three on 3.1 attempts per game over the last two seasons. He also made 83.2 percent of his free throws in that span, which shows his talent as a shooter.

This past season, as a fifth-year senior, Post averaged 17.0 points and 8.1 rebounds per game — both career highs. He also blocked 1.7 shots per game his senior year while drawing just 2.9 fouls per game. The Warriors can always use an inside presence who isn’t getting called left and right.

Like Trayce Jackson-Davis, a second-round pick a year ago, Post is an experienced player who is already 24 years old. Even if his upside isn’t sky-high, Post is immediately the Warriors’ biggest player and brings increased shooting, Golden State’s biggest need after years of revolutionizing the long ball.

There was confusion and a strange wait, but Post appears to be a player who fits into the Warriors’ system and it won’t take long for him to make an impact once he earns his chances.
