SEC football will hit the small screen next year.
The conference announced Wednesday that the teams will be featured in a Netflix docuseries about the 2024 season. The series, which will include eight 45-minute episodes, is currently in production and will be released next summer.
According to The Athletic, the series will reportedly only feature 10 SEC programs. The recommended schools are Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
Notably, Alabama, Georgia and Texas – three of the conference’s top programs – will not participate in the series. Missouri, Ole Miss and Oklahoma have also opted out.
For the participating teams, the series follows players and coaches on and off the field. While the series won’t feature some of the biggest games of the SEC series (such as the SEC Championship), it should include some memorable upsets, such as Vanderbilt’s win over Alabama and Arkansas’ win over Tennessee – which both led to students storming the field and hefty (but valuable) fines from the conference.
The production company behind the series, Box to Box Films, is the one behind Netflix’s other sports docuseries and offers a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of top athletes. The company’s most popular series is ‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’, which has reportedly sparked interest in Formula 1 racing in the United States.
In addition to “Drive to Survive,” Box to Box Films’ other series on Netflix include “Full Swing” (golf), “Break Point” (tennis) and “Sprint” (track and field sprinters).
Netflix has recently branched out into sports programming, releasing a number of successful series, such as “Quarterback,” about the NFL, and “Starting 5,” about the NBA. The streaming service also released a docuseries about Simone Biles’ return to gymnastics and the USWNT’s participation in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Additionally, the boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson was streamed live to a huge audience, with mixed reviews.
