A new year offers new perspectives.
Detroit Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot embodies this mentality perfectly.
On July 1, he began an exciting new chapter by signing a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, worth $2.5 million per season. He is doing remarkably well.
Talbot has amassed a 5-2-1 record in just nine games, with a 2.34 goals against average (GAA), an impressive .927 save percentage (SV%) and a shutout.
I don’t think Steve Yzerman expected him to be this good. But luckily for them he was.
Most recently, Talbot played a pivotal role in the Red Wings’ thrilling 3-2 overtime win, making 31 saves and setting another personal milestone. That match marked his 250th career victory. With this achievement, Talbot now ranks 65th in all-time wins for goaltenders.
Among active players, only Connor Hellebuyck, Semyon Varlamov, Frederik Andersen, Andrei Vasilevskiy, Jonathan Quick, Sergei Bobrovsky and Marc-Andre Fleury have surpassed their career wins. Talbot’s journey is not over yet and it is clear that he has the potential to make an even bigger impact in the competition.
Talbot has had a few new chapters recently; he is now on his fifth team in six seasons, having played for the Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings before retiring in Detroit.
While it’s unlikely he’ll reach the full heights of his time with the Edmonton Oilers, he’ll likely end up somewhere just below that.
And that should please Red Wings fans just fine.
