Ford will announce the official ‘Ring lap time’ of the GTD on Tuesday, December 10.
UPDATE 4-12-24: Ford has released a new trailer for its upcoming documentary about the Mustang GTD’s attempt to achieve a sub-seven-minute lap time around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The 13-minute film, called “Road to the Ring,” debuts on Tuesday, December 10. The GTD’s ‘Ring’ lap time will also be announced on that date.
The Ford Mustang GTD is an absolute specimen. The track-focused pony car features an 815-horsepower supercharged V-8 and a suspension so smart it’s a treat for any race car fan. However, all that hardcore hardware was designed not just for laughs and giggles, but to help the most powerful factory Mustang ever built do what no other American car has ever done: set a sub-seven-minute lap time around the Nürburgring Nordschleife .
While it’s not yet clear whether the GTD has achieved the goal that Ford CEO Jim Farley aimed for when the car debuted in 2023, the company today released a teaser video on its YouTube channel that lets everyone know we’ll find out soon . The 48-second clip features footage of the GTD speeding around Germany’s famous 20.94-kilometre race track, nicknamed the Green Hell, as Farley references in the video.
At one point in the video, a member of the Ford Performance team says, “No North American manufacturer has completed a sub-seven-minute lap.” Another team member says: “Our mission with GTD is quite simple: beat the Europeans on their turf.”
Will Ford make it happen? We expect to find out in the coming weeks. Ford also plans to release a documentary on its website and YouTube channel called “Road to the Ring,” detailing its quest for the “Ring Record for American Sports Cars.”
