Bat attack in NYC caught on video
Police said the woman was attacked around 2 p.m. Tuesday on Monroe Street in Lower Manhattan.
Surveillance footage shows her pulling her cell phone out of her bag as the suspects approach from behind. One punches her, while the other hits her multiple times with the baseball bat.
Investigators believe the suspects tried to take her purse, but they got away empty-handed.
The victim’s family told CBS New York that “the cries of passersby and the courageous intervention of community members deterred the perpetrator and ensured that help was called in a timely manner, potentially averting even more serious consequences.”
Family says the victim is afraid to return to work
Family members said the victim had just left the daycare center where she works down the street before the attack, and said she is now afraid to go back to work.
The 58-year-old mother suffered bruises on her head and leg. Her family said she is recovering at home but needs help with daily activities.
“Our family is deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence, and we believe sharing her story is essential to raise awareness and seek justice,” they said in a statement.
