New York Mayor Eric Adams’ chief attorney Lisa Zornberg resigns amid federal investigation into City Hall

NEW YORK — Lisa Zornberg, chief counsel to New York Mayor Eric Adams, announced her resignation late Saturday night.

It comes after federal agents a raid was carried out on several top officials of the mayor earlier this month, including NYPD Commissioner Edward CabanWHO resigned last weekas well as Chancellor of Schools David Banks.

City Hall announces resignation of Lisa Zornberg

Not many details have been released about Zornberg’s sudden resignation just before 11 p.m. Saturday night.

Zornberg was appointed the city’s chief legal counsel in July 2023, having served in the role for just over a year.

The former federal prosecutor released a statement saying, “I am deeply grateful to Mayor Adams for giving me the opportunity to serve the City, and I wholeheartedly support the work he has done and continues to do for the people of New York.”

Adams also released a statement, which read in part: “We appreciate all the work Lisa has done for our board and, more importantly, the city over the past 13 months. These are tough jobs and we don’t expect anyone to stay in them forever.”

Zornberg’s decision to resign comes just over a week after federal investigators examined the cellphones of some of the mayor’s inner circleincluding the police chief, the schools chancellor, two deputy mayors, a senior adviser and the NYPD commander of Midtown, Manhattan.

The police chief announced his resignation on Thursday, and his replacement, Tom Donlontook over as interim commissioner Friday eveningSources tell CBS News that New York detectives may be investigating the commissioner’s case. twin brother, James Cabanand possible corruption in the enforcement of the city’s nightlife.

Edward Caban’s attorney said in a statement that he does not expect to be a target of any investigation and that he plans to cooperate fully.

Adams has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and says he is cooperating with the various investigations. So far, no charges have been filed.
