No. 23 USC, Miller Moss mounts winning drive to upset No. 13 LSU 27-20

Lincoln Riley and the Trojans leave Las Vegas with a win.

No. 23 USC upset No. 13 LSU in a thrilling game at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada on Sunday night with a 27-20 victory to open the season. Trojans quarterback Miller Moss led them on an eight-play, 75-yard game-winning drive that lasted just over 90 seconds late in the fourth quarter, which Woody Marks capped with a 13-yard touchdown run.

That score was also set up by wide receiver Kyron Hudson, who made a one-handed, 20-yard grab with just 18 seconds left, putting the Trojans in the red zone thanks to a targeting call Hudson pulled as he made the catch.

Moss went 27-of-36 for 378 yards and one touchdown in the win, which marked USC’s first time joining the Big Ten conference. The Trojans intercepted LSU one last time to secure the win on their final touchdown.

The two teams entered halftime tied 10-10 on Sunday night after a battle through the first 30 minutes. Garrett Nussmeier had 191 of his 304 yards in the first half and found wide receiver Kyren Lacy seven times for 94 yards and a touchdown in the first half. But it was USC and Hudson who made the biggest plays of the first half.

Hudson swung wildly with one hand, but somehow managed to keep it from moving. The ball landed on the ground, making it a top contender for Catch of the Year.

The Trojans also got back into the red zone to open the half, but had to settle for a second straight field goal. That gave LSU a chance to bounce back. The Tigers scored on a 13-yard completion to Aaron Anderson in the third, and then came up with a huge fourth-down stop to get the ball back midway through the fourth quarter.

After a couple of failed drives, USC quarterback Miller Moss mounted a quick three-play drive, capping it with a perfect 28-yard pass to Ja’Kobi Lane, putting the Trojans up 20-17 late in the fourth quarter.

Although LSU immediately rushed the field, USC stopped them in the red zone and forced a game-tying field goal with just under two minutes left. That set up Moss’ final drive that gave the Trojans the win and handed LSU its fifth straight opening-game loss.

Live39 updates

  • With just eight seconds left on the clock, USC’s Mason Cobb intercepted a pass from LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier to make it a final score.

  • Landing Trojans!

Woody Marks takes the edge off a last-second field goal by sprinting through the LSU defense for a touchdown with just eight seconds left in the game.

  • Kyron Hudson catches a ball deep in LSU territory and it looks like they’re going to call on LSU to target to add another 15 yards to the play. The Trojans should be in prime range for a game-winning field goal after a review.

  • The Trojans find themselves on LSU’s 42-yard line with 18 seconds left on the clock, having completed four complete passes and quickly pushed down the field.

  • LSU 20, USC 20

USC managed to stop the ball a few times and forced a field goal for LSU. And again we are tied.

The Trojans have a chance to win here. It’s now 20-20 with 1:47 left on the clock.

  • LSU in scoring position

We’ve reached the two-minute warning and LSU is suddenly back in scoring position. They’re now in the red zone, where a field goal would tie the game.

  • USC 20, LSU 17

And here we go. Miller Moss just led USC on a three-play touchdown drive, taking a huge strike to Ja’Kobi Lane after he had called an offside to put the Trojans back ahead.

USC now leads 20-17 with 5:44 left in the game.

  • USC’s defense holds up

Once again, USC’s defense comes up with another stop and the Trojans get the ball back. We’ll see if Lincoln Riley can mount a better drive this time around after the last one fell apart.

It’s LSU 17, USC 13 with 6:57 left on the clock.

  • USC stopped again

The Trojans got inside the LSU 35, but they chose to do it on third-and-6 and were stopped in the backfield. They then went for it on fourth-and-9, and the Tigers nearly intercepted it.

That was a rough end to what was otherwise a very solid ride for USC and Lincoln Riley. LSU will now take over the midfield.

  • USC gets the stop

And the Trojans got the stop. They get the ball back on their own 15 yard line now with 13:25 left in the game.

  • End 3: LSU 17, USC 13

LSU has the ball and is back on the road to start the fourth quarter. If USC can’t make a quick stop here, the Trojans could be in trouble.

  • LSU gets the ball back

That series was terrible for the Trojans. They attempted some kind of reversal that nearly ended in a fumble, and were nearly pushed back to the goal line before having to punt.

LSU regains control here late in the third period.

  • LSU 17, USC 13

LSU finally got a great run after John Emery ran 39 yards up the middle, setting up a 13-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Anderson.

The Tigers now lead again after that 78-yard, seven-play drive. It’s now 17-13 with 3:42 left in the third.

  • USC 13, LSU 10

USC got all the way back into the red zone, thanks to a 41-yard reception from Kyle Ford early in the drive, but the Trojans were stalled again. Michael Lantz just drilled a 35-yard field goal to give them the lead.

The score is now 13-10 with 7:13 left in the third period.

  • LSU throws it back

And LSU can’t get anything going either, so USC gets the ball back. A pretty slow start to the second half so far.

USC starts from its own 23-yard line with 11:27 left in the first half.

  • USC starts immediately

Well, that happened fast. LSU simply shut down the Trojans and forced a point with less than 90 seconds left in the quarter, so the Tigers now take over at their own 27.

  • Second half has started

LSU has started and the second half has begun

  • Halftime stats: USC 10, LSU 10

    LSU

RB Josh Williams | 7 carries, 27 yards

WR Kyren Lacy | 7 catches, 94 yards, 1 TD

TE Mason Taylor | 6 catches, 47 yards

    USC

RB Woody Marks | 7 carries, 33 yards, 1 TD

WR Zachariah Branch | 3 catches, 47 yards

WR Duce Robinson | 1 catch, 38 yards

  • Halftime: USC 10, LSU 10

USC drove 63 yards down the field in about a minute to set up a final 29-yard field goal attempt before halftime, but they missed. The clock management wasn’t great on that drive either, and the Trojans didn’t take a single shot into the end zone.

The score is now 10-10 at half time.
