No jackpot winner! Mega Millions up to $1.15 billion for Friday’s drawing

The Mega Millions jackpot is now one of the biggest ever!

No one hit all six numbers in Tuesday’s drawing, so the jackpot will increase to an estimated $1.15 billion for Friday night’s drawing, according to the Mega Millions website. The cash option is estimated to be $516.1 million.

It will be the fifth largest Mega Millions ever and the ninth largest US jackpot in lottery history (see charts below).

The jackpot was last won on September 10 when a lottery player in Texas won $810 million.

Although no one won everything, four tickets matched the five white balls to win million dollar prizes. Those tickets were sold in California, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Wyoming. All won $1 million, except the California ticket which is worth $1,774,447, because non-jackpot prizes in the state are based on actual sales in the jurisdiction.

What does cash option mean?

The major lotteries in the United States offer two jackpot payout options: annuity and cash.

The annuity option is paid out over time. There is an immediate payment and then 29 annual payments, increasing by 5% each year. The cash option is significantly lower than the advertised jackpot, but is paid out in one lump sum. You don’t have to wait decades for all the money.

Can a jackpot winner remain anonymous?

In some states, such as New Jersey, you can win the lottery anonymously. That wasn’t always the case, but now winners can remain anonymous thanks to a law signed by Governor Phil Murphy. In other states, a winner’s name and hometown are public. Contact your state lottery for more information.
