The Spanish province of Catalonia is being hit by heavy rainfall following the flooding disaster in the neighboring Valencia region in eastern Spain.
The airport in the regional capital Barcelona canceled around 70 flights and diverted another 18 on Monday, airport administration Aena announced. Media outlets, including the regional newspaper El Periódico, published videos of a flooded runway.
In some places, rainwater ran through the ceiling into the interior of the airport. Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente reported on X that there were leaks in some parts of the airport’s terminals and parking garages.
The minister further announced that all regional rail traffic was temporarily suspended at the request of the civil protection authorities.
Puente also reported a landslide on a highway that affected road traffic, although one lane has since reopened. According to Spanish media reports, several other roads in Catalonia have been flooded.
According to media reports, around 150 educational institutions in the region canceled classes, while some residents were warned on their mobile phones to stay at home. A previously issued red weather alert has been lowered by two levels.
