NYC starts new garbage bin regulations for residential buildings. Here’s what landlords need to know.

NEW YORK– That of New York The war against rats is entering the next phase Tuesday with new waste bin rules for residents.

Starting Nov. 12, residential buildings with one to nine units must use trash bins to place their trash at the curb.

There is a warning period until January 2, 2025. After that, property owners face a $50 fine.

The Sanitation Ministry is expected to implement more changes for larger residential buildings next spring.

What are the new requirements for waste bins?

According to the Sanitation Department, bins must be 55 gallons or less, with a secure lid.

If your building does not have a trash bin, you can purchase one from the city online here or by calling 1-855-NYC-BINS. Sanitation officials say the bins are available exclusively to property owners and building managers, and will only be delivered to addresses within the five boroughs.
