NYC Unveils Latest Weapon in the War on Rats: Official Trash Cans

02:17

NEW YORK – New York City has unveiled a humorous commercial for its new official trash bins.

It’s all part of the city’s effort to eliminate the ubiquitous piles of trash bags that New Yorkers are used to seeing strewn across city streets. The city produces about 14 billion pounds of trash a year, and to combat the rats that feed on all that waste, the city has implemented a containerization plan.

A month ago, New York City opened its first-ever official trash bin, designed to work with sanitation vehicles. Starting Nov. 12, all residential buildings with nine or fewer units will be required to put their trash in dumpsters. Once that’s implemented, officials say 70 percent of all trash in New York City will be put in dumpsters.

“Are you tired of seeing… garbage juice oozing all over the sidewalk?”

Now the city is promoting the new bins with a lighthearted video on social media, starring Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch and featuring a guest appearance from Mayor Eric Adams.

“Are you tired of all the trash on the streets? Tired of rats treating our neighborhoods like five-star restaurants? Tired of watching garbage juice trickle down the sidewalk?” Tisch says in the commercial.

The official waste bins are equipped with wheels and a lockable lid and can be purchased online.

The waste and recycling bins come in two sizes:

  • 35 gallons, which costs $45.88
  • 45 gallons, which costs $53.01

A 21 gallon compost pile costs $43.47.
