A manhunt is underway for a man believed to have set fire to a woman sleeping on a subway train, leading to her death.
The woman, who was not identified, was asleep on a idling F train at Brooklyn’s Stillwell Avenue station just before 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning, New York police said. It was there that a man approached her, set her on fire and fled the subway, police said.
Police are investigating it as a homicide as the woman was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services.
Photos have been released of the man suspected in the case. He was described as being 6 feet tall, weighing 130 pounds, and somewhere between 25 and 30 years old.
The photos show him wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, jeans, a knitted hat with a red band and brown boots.
Authorities are urging the public to submit tips to the Crime Stoppers hotline, offering a reward of up to $10,000.
New York City Councilman Justin Brannan, who represents South Brooklyn, posted on X that he was aware of the “horrific sacrifice” at the subway station. He also announced that the police will provide an update to the public on Sunday evening.
“I am awaiting a briefing from the NYPD with all the details. I will share more concrete information as I have it,” Brannan wrote. “Please keep the victim in mind.”
