The chief of the Oakland Fire Department said Saturday that the Oakland Hills fire was 50% contained.

Chief Damon Covington said crews will be in the area all day and they will be removing some eucalyptus trees for safety reasons.

Another safety issue will be the weather and wind conditions. According to Covington, there are several hot spots and stumps that remain on fire. He said crews would do a lot of manual work to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

The The fire started on Friday around 1:30 p.m. Wind and temperature contributed to the fire, drawing about 200 firefighters to battle the blaze.

Some of the evacuations were lifted, Covington said, but Campus Drive at the top of the ridge remains evacuated.

Covington said having a pre-assembled strike team in the county was a big help in preventing an attack disastrous fire like in 1991.
