Oaklawn is offering a virtual seminar

Nov. 15 – GOSHEN – Registration is open for “Count us in: Supporting School Attendance for a Better Future” taking place Tuesday at 9 a.m. This is a free, virtual seminar from Oaklawn.

People can join in to discuss the impact school attendance has on long-term student success and how to support students, families and schools in building better futures through attendance. They explore the impact of absenteeism, the benefits of regular school participation, which students are at greater risk for attendance problems, and how schools and communities can work together within a tiered framework to support strong school attendance, as well as learning about specific initiatives. within this framework to Elkhart and St. Joseph counties.

Learning objectives include understanding the impact of school attendance on students’ overall well-being, identifying students at greater risk for school attendance problems and the most effective ways to determine appropriate interventions, and learning how schools and community partners can work together to promote school attendance and address attendance problems

Presenter Patricia A. Graczyk is a licensed clinical and school psychologist in the state of Illinois and an assistant professor of clinical psychology at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Her current research interests focus on using a school-based tiered framework of evidence-based practices to promote school attendance, reduce school attendance problems, and prevent and treat anxiety, depression, and trauma in children and youth. Graczyk is active nationally and internationally in promoting school attendance and tackling school attendance problems.

Host Anna Sawatzky is director of The SOURCE, Elkhart County’s healthcare system, and leads Elkhart’s “Be Present, Be Your Future Today” school attendance campaign.

Angie Skwarcan is the Prevention Coordinator for the CASIE Center and oversees the Truancy Prevention Program that works with schools and families to remove barriers to participation. This seminar is free, but registration is required.
