Ocean Winds and UFRN sign MoU for offshore wind energy in Brazil

Ocean Winds (OW) and Brazil’s Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance the country’s offshore wind energy capabilities.

The collaboration will leverage OW’s significant global experience, including 18.5 GW of total capacity, with 2 GW under construction and 1.5 GW already operational, to strengthen Brazil’s offshore wind sector.

Since 2020, OW has registered five offshore wind energy project proposals with a combined capacity of 15 GW with the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA).

The proposals concern the states of Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul.

The agreement aims to align critical factors for industry growth, including sustainable regulatory frameworks, local supply chain strategies and community engagement.

The focus is also on developing a skilled workforce, equipped with the best resources for project implementation and long-term sustainability.

The partnership underlines the importance of investing in advanced technologies and fostering collaboration with academic and industry stakeholders, with the aim of positioning OW as a frontrunner in offshore wind energy development.

UFRN has a long history of working with the energy sector, bringing valuable academic expertise to the partnership.

The joint initiative between OW and UFRN is poised to stimulate economic growth and generate employment in Brazil’s offshore wind energy sector, with a particular emphasis on workforce development initiatives.

By addressing the sector’s specific skills needs, the partnership aims to ensure access to a highly skilled workforce, which is essential for the sustainable growth and expansion of the sector.

Rafael Palhares, OW Brazil and South America Business Development Director, said: “For Ocean Winds, prioritizing local value generation throughout the project lifecycle is essential to contribute to social development.

“The most effective way to achieve this is through a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders committed to the right progression of the industry.

“This also applies to academia, which goes beyond simply advancing science; it is about investing resources to ensure that knowledge is accessible through the right tools and methodologies.”
